The legislative ballot took place on December 6 in Venezuela. Observers agree that it went smoothly.

It was marked by a participation rate of 30%, a sharp drop compared to the legislative elections of 2015 and 2010. It took place under the exceptional conditions of a very serious economic crisis aggravated by that of the Covid19. However, these two causes cannot account for such a low participation rate. To this must probably be added the weariness of a population whose living conditions have deteriorated particularly because of the illegal American sanctions and the political maneuvers carried out by J. Guaido, the liege man of the United States... and of France, self-proclaimed President, aiming to destabilize the country.
The second observation is that the alliance formed around the Unified Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) of President Nicolas Maduro now finds itself with a solid majority in the future National Assembly, i.e. at least 177 of the 277 seats with more than 65% of the votes cast. This success puts an end to the chamber elected in 2015 dominated by the opposition which had allowed the development of political maneuvers aimed at sabotaging the legislative work with a view to justifying the putschist attempts and the external military interventions. The result of the opposition forces who had agreed to participate in the poll demonstrates their weakness and inability to put forward a credible alternative. As for those who boycotted the ballot with J. Guaido, their attempt at a parallel ballot on December 12 ended in resounding failure.
The Communist Party of Venezuela, which in 2015 participated in an alliance with the PSUV, presented itself this year under the banner of the Popular Revolutionary Alliance. This alliance obtains 168,743 votes (2.7%). The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV), together with the organizations that make up the Popular Revolutionary Alternative, fought a very hard political battle in the difficult conditions of the pandemic and the capitalist crisis, in addition to facing the exclusion from bourgeois media and the effort of social democratic forces to hide and therefore minimize its candidacy (¹).
In this context, it is an important fact that a Communist deputy was elected. He will be able to promote the voice of the PCV, the interests of the working class and other popular layers and their struggles within the National Assembly.
These legislative elections gave rise to further attacks against Venezuela from the United States, its allies and various imperialist alliances. The imperialist EU has sided with these attacks. It continues to support the discredited putschist J. Guaidó and the reactionary forces in Venezuela who are calling for stronger sanctions. Owing to their failure, there is no doubt that in the near future the imperialist attacks will intensify.
From this point of view there is nothing to be expected from the new United States government.
Our party once again condemns the attacks of the United States, the EU and their allies in Latin America. It expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and with the PCV.
